Apollo 13...our story for Term 4

This term we are learning the story of Apollo 13.
Last week we listened to the story and talked about the parts that we liked or any questions that we had.  There was lots of conversations happening around space and astronauts...we have many wonderings about astronauts in particular.

We made a super quick story map showing the main parts of the story and then used this to help us step the story.  This is the part of the storytelling process where we say a word and show an action that represents each image on our story map.  It helps us to recall the events of the story quickly, easily and in the right order.

This is the longest story we have learnt through the storytelling approach, so it might take us a while to really remember lots of the details!  We are hoping to take a copy of our story maps home so that we can practise retelling the story to our whānau!

What's next?  
Well, this week already we have some exciting Literacy tasks based around our story.  We will continue to unpack the story in more detail and deepen our knowledge and understanding of what happens as well as how the characters were feeling at different points of the story.

Non-Fiction Storytelling

We have kicked off Term 3 with a non-fiction text for our Storytelling...about Water. Although the elements of how we learn the a non-fiction text are the same as how we would learn a fiction story, the way in which we do it is quite different. Last week we had a lot of fun as we started to learn the words and gestures of our new text.  Some of the gestures we are using are taken from New Zealand sign language. First, we listened to the story and noticed that there were actions that were repeated when the same word was repeated. Mr Yuki then helped us to recreate the text into a map which incorporated both words and pictures to represent the words. We spent some time recording ourselves talking the map... Next we watched how to step the map and then went away to practise in groups... Digital Ignition: Day 1

We've just experienced an incredible opportunity provided by Digital Ignition Māpura Matihiko and enjoyed a full hour of rich learning centred around digital technology, problem solving and creativity.  Our talented Koru 2 tamariki worked in teams with digital tools and apps inspired to solve real world needs.  The session began with a fun and challenging game that required us to work as a team, think outside of the box and use our communication skills against the clock.  We were to construct a tower as tall as possible made out of popsicle sticks and blue tack using only one hand in under 4 minutes.  "This was so much fun and we had to quickly share our ideas and listen to others." - Kate Conversation filled the hall as new strategies arose from collapsed towers.  We then learned about a man who makes artificial limbs for children out of the kindness of his heart using a 3D printer in his garage.  We began to understand how technology serves a large p

Celebration of Learning

Our Koru 2 tamariki all worked together and did a massive tidy up in preparation for our celebration of learning evening.  We spent some time on Tuesday playing parents and students practicing giving a classroom tour. Our community evening was a big success.  We had several family and whānau stop in to visit our space.  We were so impressed with many of our Koru 2 tamariki as they did such a wonderful job sharing their learning with them.    The Kapa haka and Pasifika performances were a wonderful way to end the day.  Thank you to everyone who came and made this wonderful event happen.
